Founded in 1853, Alameda County in California was formed by merging parts of Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties, established earlier in 1850. Named after the area’s original name, “Alameda,” which roughly translates to “a grove of poplars,” the county holds the rank of being the seventh-largest in terms of population in the state.
